Here Comes The Conference
Well, the time has come. Time to dust off my first book and bring it along with me and do my best to pimp it out to the people who might actually be able to do something with it. Tomorrow morning I'm going to the: Minnesota SCBWI Fall Conference.
For those not in the know, SCBWI stands for Societ of Children's Book Writers & Illustrators. It's an all day long deal where people who write and draw for children's books. Sounds lame? Well, maybe...maybe not. There's the potential that I'll get to rub elbows with editors and agents and the like. I've got a bunch of stuff I'll be able to use to promote it. Nothing obnoxious, mind you, but things that will put people in contact with me.
Firstly, I bought my own domain name. I'm not going to post it here yet, since there's nothing to see but with it, I got a nice new e-mail address for all of my 'writing correspondence.' This is, of course, assuming there will be any.
'But how are people going to e-mail you? You going to just have them jot down your e-mail address?'
Nope. I've created some business cards that have my name and info and also the title of my book. Behind the title is a nice subtle picture related to the book. Also included on the card is my new-fangled e-mail address. Down the road, when I get my promotional site up and running, I'll add the website address on there too.
Also, I've (finally) gotten my synopsis and query letter in a place that works. Short, sweet, and catchy. I'm going to have some of those on hand for the peeps to look at. Of course, I'll also include my contact info on there.
So...big things are possible this weekend. I'm not going to say I'm going to come home with a book deal (I'm not that gullible) but I need to pick up the pace in getting my work out there. This is the thing, and it might make me seem big headed:
- I know it's good.
- I know that if it's picked up it will do well.
- I think it's better than a bunch of the junk they publish.
Wow. A bit sure of ourselves, aren't we? Well...yeah, kind of. I'm really proud of it and I think that if someone gave it a chance (ahem...) they'd be suprised. From what I can tell from my unofficial reviews, people are ready for a bunch of books about a boy and his magic sandbox.
That's all I'm saying.
P.S. I'll try to Audioblog from the conference and I'll be sure to report any craziness that happens.
